The protection of the environment is one of the most important global issues facing humanity. From the destruction of habitats through deforestation, desertification, and land-use conversion to the extinction of species from pollution, climate change, and the introduction of invasive species. Threats to life on land are multiplying, multifaceted, and far reaching. Most worryingly, they are often irreversible. SDG 15 seeks to protect, restore, and promote the sustainable use of the environment, in particular through the sustainable management of ecosystems such as forests, mountains, and waterways to prevent land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
